This article is an advance in research about the state of the art in strategic management and its association with quality management systems; it describes the evolution of its most representative aspects, synthesizing global context, the fundamental aspects in the organization, and identifies the elements that enable to strengthen management and improve the capacity of the organizations. The state of the art in strategic management is described by generations: Antiquity and Middle Ages, the 1800 centennial and the 1900 centennial, which is described in two-decade periods, built from the most representative milestones of each period.A partir de los principios administrativos de la estructura jerárquica y del concepto de estrategia en el ámbito militar, surge la administración científica. Este artículo constituye un avance de investigación sobre el estado del arte del direccionamiento estratégico organizacional y su asociación con los sistemas de gestión de la calidad; describe la evolución de sus aspectos más representativos, sintetizando el contexto mundial, los aspectos fundamentales de la organización, e identifica los elementos que permiten fortalecer la gestión y mejorar la capacidad de las organizaciones.
