Summary: | Physical inactivity (PI) is a public health problem and risk factor for non-communicable diseases (NCDS). We aimed to estimate the burden of mor-tality due to NCDS attributable to PI in people aged from 25 to 64 during 2015 in Colombia; and the burden of potentially preventable NCD deaths, considering a 15% reduction in the prevalence of PI. We used data from the global burden of disease study 2016, the dane deaths certificates and the National Survey of the Nutritional Situation 2015. The prevalence of PI and population attributable risk (PAR%) were calculated. The number of potentially preventable deaths with a 15% reduction in the prevalence of PI was estimated. The prevalence of PI was 50.1%, and the mortality due to NCD attributed to PI was 16.2%. The PAR% was higher for ischemic heart disease, diabetes mellitus and colon cancer. By reducing the prevalence of PI by 15%, the PAR% showed a greater decrease for ischemic heart disease, strokes and diabetes mellitus. In Colombia, 50.1% of mortality due to NCD was attributable to PI in 2015. An additional reduction of 12.6% in deaths due to NCD was projected by decreasing the prevalence of PI by 15%. |
