description In this review we present the results of the exploration of the relevant research activities and topics developed in internal combustion engines by Colombian universities. The objective has been to determine what has been investigated, what theoretical, constructive, technological, operational and manufacturing foundations have been assumed by the research groups and researchers and, from there, to propose lines of research that complement and contribute. It was found that Colombia has competitive scientific capacity in: characterization of alternative fuels, diagnosis and prediction of combustion in ignition engines, modeling and prediction of perfor-mance of engines powered by ethanol-gasoline blends, characterization of emissions, modeling and experimentation in modes of ignition by compression of homogeneous load, design and construction of equipment for monitoring and diagnosis with non-intrusive techniques. In gene-ral, research has been driven both by environmental demands of the transport system and by the search for alternative fuel sources.

El objetivo ha sido determinar qué se ha venido investigando, qué fundamentaciones teóri-cas, constructivas, tecnológicas, de operación y de manufactura se han asumido por parte de los grupos de investigación e investigadores y, a partir de allí, proponer líneas de investigación que complementen y aporten. Se encuentra que Colombia tiene capacidad científica competitiva en: caracterización de combustibles alternativos, diagnóstico y predicción de la combustión en motores de encendido provocado, modelado y predicción de desempeño de motores alimenta-dos con mezclas de etanol-gasolina, caracterización de emisiones, modelado y experimentación en modos de encendido por compresión de carga homogénea, diseño y construcción de equi-pos para monitoreo y diagnóstico con técnicas no intrusivas. En general, las investigaciones han sido impulsadas tanto por demandas ambientales del sistema de transporte como por la búsqueda de fuentes combustibles alternativas.Nesta revisão, apresentamos os resultados da exploração das atividades de pesquisa relevantes e tópicos desenvolvidos em motores de combustão interna pelas universidades colombianas. O objetivo foi determinar o que foi investigado, quais fundamentos teóricos, construtivos, tecno-lógicos, operacionais e de produção foram assumidos pelos grupos de pesquisa e pesquisado-res e, a partir daí, propor linhas de pesquisa que complementem e possam contribuir. É que a Colômbia tem capacidade científica competitiva na caracterização de combustíveis alternativos, diagnóstico e previsão de ignição do motor de ignição, modelagem e previsão de desempenho motores alimentados com misturas de etanol-gasolina, caracterização das emissões, de mode-lagem e experimentação em  modos de ignição por compressão de carga homogênea, desenho e construção de equipamentos para monitoramento e diagnóstico com técnicas não intrusivas.
