Gradually, dental schools beliefs starting from individualistic concepts of occlusion are sentenced to admit conceptual changes regarding masticatory dynamics and the basic sciences are providing the necessary solid bases for this evolution. Moreover, thinking in dysfunctional or pathological stomatognathic scenarios like the bruxism and temporomandibular disorders demands a wider perspective of this notion. The correspondence between bruxism and dental relation should be understood exclusively as mechanics and generated in the dysfunctional muscular activity with neurobiologic origins that explain it beyond its evident outlying effect. This article looks emphasizing the prevailing necessity to understand the interdental relationships and temporomandibular disorders from a neurophysiological, pathophysiological and musculo-skeletal perspective concomitant and implicit of the stomatognathic system.La odontología es una ciencia biomédica que sufre rápidos cambios en sus dominios tecnológicos y biológicos. Gradualmente, las escuelas dentales formadas a partir de conceptos individualistas de oclusión están destinadas a admitir cambios conceptuales en lo referente a la dinámica masticatoria, y las ciencias básicas proporcionan las bases sólidas necesarias para esta evolución. Más aún, pensar en escenarios estomatognáticos patológicos o disfuncionales como el bruxismo y los desórdenes temporomandibulares exige una perspectiva más amplia de esta noción. La correspondencia entre el bruxismo y la relación dental debe entenderse exclusivamente como mecánica y generada en la actividad disfuncional muscular con orígenes neurobiológicos que lo explican más allá de su efecto periférico evidente. Este artículo busca enfatizar la imperante necesidad de entender las relaciones interdentales y los desórdenes temporomandibulares desde una perspectiva neurofisiológica, fisiopatológica y músculo-esquelética concomitante e implícita del sistema estomatognático.[Ramírez LM.
