description Objetivo: evaluar la asociación entre la capacidad física funcional (CFF) con la condición bucal (CB) en las personas mayores vinculadas con una institución geriátrica de Bucaramanga.Materiales y métodos: se realizó un estudio observacional analítico de corte transversal. El universo estuvo constituido por 101 individuos y la muestra por 68 personas que cumplieron con los criterios de inclusión. Se estudiaron variables sociodemográficas, condiciones sistémicas, la capacidad física funcional, la condición bucal, mental y los soportes sociales. Para el análisis se calcularon medidas de resumen según la naturaleza de cada variable. Se realizó un análisis de factores para determinar los atributos que integraron el constructo condición bucal. Se relacionó esta condición con cada variable explicativa mediante pruebas de Chi2 y test exacto de Fisher. Se calcularon los OR crudos y sus intervalos de confianza. Se aplicó análisis de regresión logística, métodos de corrección de los OR, para obtener RR (RP) y se evaluó la bondad de ajuste del modelo.Resultados: el deterioro de la CFF y el estado mental se asociaron con una mala condición bucal con RP 3,63 [IC 95% 0,98 - 1,82] y RP 6,84 [IC95% 1,38 - 2,32], respectivamente.Conclusiones: el deterioro del estado mental y la CFF podrían afectar el desarrollo de habilidades esenciales para la vida, dentro de las que cabría considerar aquellas orientadas a mantener una buena condición bucal, por lo que los programas de promoción de la salud y prevención de la enfermedad bucales en las personas mayores deben evaluar estos aspectos.[Concha SC, Camargo DM. Ustasalud 2013; 12: 20- 32]Objective: to assess the association between physical functional capacity (PFC) and oral condition (OC) in an institution for elderly care in Bucaramanga.Methods: an analytical observational cross sectional study was done. 101 people constituted the universe and 68, the sample that fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The variables of the study were social-demographic general health, the oral condition, the PFC, mental state, the social supports. In the analysis, summary measures were calculated according to the nature of each variable. Analysis of factors was made to determine the attributes that integrated the OC. The OC variable was related to each of the variables registered in the study by Chi2 and Fisher's exact test, the crude OR and confidence intervals were calculated. Logistic regression analysis and OR correction methods were applied and the RR (PR) was obtained and the goodness of fit of the model was evaluated.Results: the decline in the functional physical condition and the mental condition were associated with a poor oral health with PR 3.63 [CI 95% 0.98 - 1.82] and PR 6.84 [CI 95% 1.38 – 2.32], respectively.Conclusion: the reduced in the motor skills and mental condition will affect the essential abilities for life, including the ones to help to preserve a good oral health.
