Description
Summary:The Basque diaspora is a topic that has been thoroughly studied, however, the effects of information and communications technology (ITC) over the Basque migrants are an object of study still to be investigated. Through two Doctoral Thesis, this paper discusses qualitatively and ethnographically how Basque citizens build national identity outside the Basque Country through blogs and Facebook, both in Diaspora groups and also in not so consolidated groups. The analysis of blogs shows that Internet is a tool to build and maintain Basque identity while Facebook shows it is a space where citizens reside. Therefore, it can be said that the different identity constructions of migrants and of those living in the Basque Country meet in Hyperspace. This leads to identity tensions by opposing different constructions of national identity from different social and historical perspectives. Digital country is the concept proposed to refer to this shared country: a dimension where the realities of geographical locations and online spaces converge. The text allows one to advance in the digital ethnography and in the mapping of geographical and symbolic borders of countries in the age of the Internet.
