La viruela símica es uno de los eventos que ha tenido impacto en la salud pública en tiempos recientes. Esta enfermedad zoonótica tiene como agente causal al virus de la viruela símica y la transmisión puede ocurrir de animales infectados a humanos, de persona a persona y de ambientes contaminados o fómites a seres humanos. A partir de mayo de 2022, se confirmaron gran cantidad de pacientes infectados en países no endémicos de todo el mundo, lo que puso en alerta a la Organización Mundial de la salud (OMS). Para prevenir esta patología o como profilaxis, la OMS recomienda la vacunación para personas infectadas, contactos o personal en riesgo de contagio. Las vacunas empleadas originalmente se crearon para combatir la viruela, las cuales pueden ser de primera, segunda y tercera generación. Debido a la emergencia internacional por este brote, se aprobaron para combatir la viruela del simio las vacunas de segunda y de tercera generación. La vacuna de segunda generación, correspondiente a ACAM2000, virus vaccinia vivo replicante genera efectos adversos, y con el fin de disminuir la capacidad de replicación y eventos secundarios, se crearon las de tercera generación, MVA-BN virus vaccinia vivo no replicante y LC16 virus vaccinia vivo mínimamente replicante. El acceso a estas vacunas es limitado ya que hacen parte de las reservas estratégicas de los países. La eficacia de la vacunación está basada en su evaluación en biomodelos como los monos, pero la evidencia de la efectividad en humanos no ha sido comprobada. |

Esta enfermedad zoonótica tiene como agente causal al virus de la viruela símica y la transmisión puede ocurrir de animales infectados a humanos, de persona a persona y de ambientes contaminados o fómites a seres humanos. A partir de mayo de 2022, se confirmaron gran cantidad de pacientes infectados en países no endémicos de todo el mundo, lo que puso en alerta a la Organización Mundial de la salud (OMS). Para prevenir esta patología o como profilaxis, la OMS recomienda la vacunación para personas infectadas, contactos o personal en riesgo de contagio. Las vacunas empleadas originalmente se crearon para combatir la viruela, las cuales pueden ser de primera, segunda y tercera generación. Debido a la emergencia internacional por este brote, se aprobaron para combatir la viruela del simio las vacunas de segunda y de tercera generación. La vacuna de segunda generación, correspondiente a ACAM2000, virus vaccinia vivo replicante genera efectos adversos, y con el fin de disminuir la capacidad de replicación y eventos secundarios, se crearon las de tercera generación, MVA-BN virus vaccinia vivo no replicante y LC16 virus vaccinia vivo mínimamente replicante. El acceso a estas vacunas es limitado ya que hacen parte de las reservas estratégicas de los países. La eficacia de la vacunación está basada en su evaluación en biomodelos como los monos, pero la evidencia de la efectividad en humanos no ha sido comprobada.Monkeypox is one of the events that has had an impact on public health in the year 2022. This zoonotic disease is caused by the monkeypox virus and transmission can occur from infected animals to humans, from person to person, and from contaminated environments or fomites to humans. As of May 2022, many infected patients were confirmed in non-endemic countries around the world, which put the WHO on alert. To prevent this pathology or as prophylaxis, WHO recommends vaccination for infected persons, contacts, or personnel at risk of infection. The vaccines originally used were created to combat smallpox, which can be of first, second and third generation. Due to the international emergency caused by this outbreak, second and third generation vaccines were approved to combat monkeypox. The second-generation vaccine, corresponding to ACAM2000, live replicating vaccinia virus, generates adverse effects, and to reduce the replication capacity and secondary events, the third-generation vaccines, MVA-BN live non-replicating vaccinia virus and LC16 live minimally replicating vaccinia virus, were created.
