Summary:The concept of expression, which according to Deleuze is vital to Spinoza’s Ethics, finds one of its main precedents in the notions of complicatio-explicatio. !ese notions come from a long neoplatonist tradition, and explore the relations between the One and the many. In Renaissance’s reformulation of that problem, they lead to a radicalization of an immanence that subverts the traditional emanative schemes. Nicholas of Cusa is a key figure in that transformation. In this paper, we will study the complicatio-explicatio theory in the Cusanic ontology of the created Universe or the contracted maximum, which is developped in Book II of De docta ignorantia. We will also examine its critical reception by Deleuze, in occasion of his interpretation of Spinozist philosophy, but also in regards to his own ontological project. Our objective is double: to analize Nicholas’ versión of the notions of complicatio-explicatio and its projections in Spinoza’s Ethics, and to emphasize the aspects of that theory which can have a larger interest in Deleuze’s thought. So we are reading Nicholas of Cusa as a philosophical source to Deleuze’s work, to show how the complicatio-explicatio pair moves us closer towards the Spinozist plane of immanence, and to a thinking of Difference.
