Summary:Introduction: Platelets are considered as small pieces of cell, derived from the fragmentation of the mature megakaryocyte, whose purpose is to maintain vascular integrity. Thrombocytopenia is defined as the decrease in platelet count according to the biological reference intervals, which affects primary hemostasis and is reflected in episodes of bleeding. It is important the therapeutic application of platelets to increase the number and to stop the spontaneous and / or surgical bleeding. Two methods of obtaining platelets, the foregoing platelet concentrate of whole blood (buffy coat) and platelets by apheresis are now known. These two procedures are aimed at obtaining platelets, but one technique is more advantageous in terms of patient safety, exposing it to a single donor and thereby reducing the risk of posttransfusion complications. Objective: To demonstrate the benefits in the use of platelets obtained by apheresis on the platelet concentrate from whole blood in the management of thrombocytopenia. Method: The bibliographic review is done manually and electronically in databases such as Google Scholar, EBSC, ScienceDirect, EMBASE, Scielo, Pubmed, ERIC, National Institute of Health reports. We used 50 citations in both Spanish and English for the respective exploration. Conclusion: It is demonstrated that the platelets obtained by apheresis exhibit the patient to a single donor and reduces the risk of transfusion complications derived from its use, when compared with the conventional technique.
