Description
Summary:Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide and represents a serious public health problem, with approximately 14.1 million new cases and 8.2 million deaths each year (Ferlay, J., Soerjomataram, I., Dikshit, R., Eser, S., Mathers, C., Rebelo, M., Maxwell Parkin, D., Forman, D. & Bray, F., 2015) However, thanks to the available knowledge, it is possible to control it to a large extent through the different plans of prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment and palliative care, the latter being of great importance to mitigate the physical, emotional and social impact of the illness (Vijayvergia, N. & Denlinger, C.S. 2015). Palliative care in patients with cancer seeks to satisfy the need both to relieve symptoms and psychosocial attention, providing constant support to the patient and his family from the moment he is diagnosed. The nursing professional plays a fundamental role in the palliative care of the cancer patient, providing comprehensive care of the profession and making an important part of the multidisciplinary team responsible for support and accompaniment from the moment the disease is diagnosed.
