This paper describes the historical process and current sta-tus of environmental mainstreaming in higher education institutions of Latin America and the Caribbean. It is intendede to describe from a historical perspective the three-staged process that has evolved for over more than six decades. During this period, environmental higher education has initially focused on natural resources; later, on environment and finally, on sustainable development. Throughout this process, a very important role has been played by the promotional programmes of several inter-national agencies, as well as the national environmental education policies of some countries in the region. Ne-vertheless, the credit for the accomplishments achieved during the long process of greening higher education has to be primarily awarded to the universities themselves.In order to describe the current situation of higher edu-cation in Latin America and the Caribbean, there will be a presentation of some of the experiences that the authors had known when writing this paper, concerning the areas of training, research, outreach and environmental mana-gement of universities at regional level. This overview will shed light over the great diversity of practices and approa-ches regarding sustainability that Latin America higher education institutions have developed. However, the available knowledge about this complex process remains fragmented and superficial. To overcome these limitations, it is essential that the community devo-ted to the study of environmental education in universities were prone to agree on developing a common research programme, a collective work that is just beginning. |

En este proceso han cumplido un papel muy importante los programas de promoción de varios organismos internacionales y las políticas nacionales de educación ambiental de algunos países de la región. Pero el mérito de los logros alcanzados en el largo proceso de ambientalización de la educación superior corresponde principalmente a las mismas universidades.Para describir la situación actual de la educación ambiental superior en ALC se presentan algunas de las experiencias que conocían los autores, en el momento de escribir el artículo, con respecto a la formación, la investigación, la exten-sión y la gestión ambiental en las universidades. Este panorama general permite apreciar la gran diversidad de prácticas y enfoques sobre la sustentabilidad que han desarrollado las instituciones de educación superior de la región. Sin embargo, el conocimiento que se tiene sobre este complejo proceso es todavía muy fragmentado y superficial. Para superar estas limitaciones será necesario que la comunidad científica dedicada al estudio de la educación ambiental a nivel superior acuerde y desarrolle un programa común de investigación, en un trabajo colectivo que apenas está comenzando.Este documento apresenta uma visão geral do processo histórico e a situação recente da incorporação da dimensão ambiental nas instituições de ensino superior na América Latina e no Caribe. A partir de uma perspectiva histórica, mostra como esse processo foi desenvolvido por mais de seis décadas, atra-vés de três etapas caracterizadas por uma educação am-biental superior focada em recursos naturais, no meio ambiente e desenvolvimento sustentável. Neste processo desempenharam um papel muito importante os progra-mas de promoção de diversas organizações internacionais e as políticas nacionais de educação ambiental de alguns países da região. Mas o mérito das conquistas no longo processo de ambientalização do ensino superior corres-ponde principalmente às mesmas universidades. Para apresentar a situação atual da educação ambiental na América Latina e no Caribe, são descritas algumas das experiências que os autores conheciam no momento de escrever o artigo no que diz respeito à formação, pesqui-sa, extensão e gestão ambiental nas universidades. Esta visão permite apreciar a grande diversidade de práticas e abordagens para a sustentabilidade que desenvolvem as instituições de ensino superior na região. No entanto, o conhecimento que se tem sobre este pro-cesso complexo é ainda muito fragmentado e superficial. Para superar essas limitações é necessário que a comuni-dade científica dedicada ao estudo da educação ambien-tal em nível superior concorde e desenvolva uma agenda comum de investigação, em um
