Summary: | Although the wetlands of the Sabana de Bogotá (Colombia) are strategic and officially protected ecosystems, they are highly endangered by urban expansion. Only fragments now exist of the once extensive wetland system. The Bogotá guinea pig (Cavia anolaimae) in endemic to the eastern Colombian Andes with a restricted geographic distribution. Even though the species is not yet incluyed in the red list of Colombian mammals, the remaining populations are locally threatened. Therefore, the University U.D.C.A, together with ZGAP, started a research project to collect information on the natural history of the species as a baseline for future conservation actions. |
