Description
Summary:According to data from the European Food Safety Authority, energy drinks are consumed by 30% of adults between 18 and 65 years old, within which there is an age range belonging to the university population, susceptible to taking these products by the need to improve academic performance. Such situation lends itself to the abuse of their consumption, which can result in undesirable reactions in the 9 body such as palpitations, diaphoresis, headache, hyperactivity, polyuria, among others. A transversal analytical study was carried out, applied to students of the University of Applied and Environmental Sciences, belonging to the first 4 semesters of Medicine, in order to identify the prevalence and health effects derived from the consumption of this type of substances. A prevalence of consumption was found corresponding to 48% and its use was associated with the academic load in 88%, the brands of energy drinks consumed with greater frequency were Vive 100 and Speed with the same percentage (31%), and the 17% of consumers reported having polyuria and headache, with the same percentage, as the most frequent health effects. Definitely, the consumption of these beverages is increasing, and thanks to the constant appearance of similar products and innovative brands, the population is more susceptible to abuse its consumption, and with it, health problems. In this analysis it was possible to establish that the increase in urine is the symptom that predominates and has the greatest association, while headache and hyperactivity are related in a lesser proportion. For the other symptoms found in the literature it is necessary to apply studies in larger samples, since the results of this thesis were not very conclusive and despite having a proven clinical validity, its association and epidemiological validity is not yet strong.
