Summary:The rapid human occupation in the paramo has caused the need to expand the agricultural frontier, due to the increase of productive practices to meet the demand for food required, and consequently, a drastic change from traditional forms of agriculture to intensive farming systems, accelerating soil degradation and modifying the dynamic equilibrium of this ecosystem. In the face of the prevailing need to preserve strategic ecosystems, this review arises that aims to describe the fallow as a cultural practice in a historical context. Initially an analysis is presented that allows to answer the following questions: What is the origin of fallow practice? Why do it? Is it a productive and / or cultural practice? Does fallow represent losses or gains of the system? Subsequently a particular case is presented, which describes the fallow practice in paramo. The evidence found in the literature suggests that traditional practices with rest periods can be an appropriate model for the design of tropical agroecosystems, favoring positively environmental conditions and especially of strategic ecosystems such as the paramos.
