This article starts from these conceptions and explores some abolitionist arguments for andagainst, in the first period when the idea of nation takesplace by Creole people, since it is assumed there is no racial difference. Nevertheless, this paper illustrates how tokeep the slavery was considered as a contradiction to theindependence legitimacy. It also looks for the race term andhow it appears in books that are related with this debate,because of racial thinking is not absent from nation beginning. Finally, some conclusions are given as reflections aboutthe urgency to pluralize and densify representations and rethorics of the Independence from a post-colonial approachto ask about their position those who were subordinating.Partiendo de la periodización que Appelbaum, Macpherson y Rosemblatt (2003) elaboran acerca de la visión de raza y nación en América Latina, este artículo explora algunos de los argumentos abolicionistas y contraabolicionistas del primer periodo de gestación de la idea de nación por parte de los criollos, donde supuestamente no aparece la diferencia racial. En este artículo quiere mostrarse cómo mantener la esclavitud era considerada una contradicción con la legitimidad de la Independencia. También busca examinar cómo aparece el término de raza en textos de la época asociados a este debate, por lo que el pensamiento racial no se encuentra del todo ausente de este momento de formación de la nación.
