Facultad de Ciencias Humanas, Sociales y de la Educación, Pereira, 2008La Demencia Vascular (DV) es la segunda causa más frecuente de demencia después de la Enfermedad de Alzheimer (EA), ocasionando deterioro cognitivo y sociolaboral en las personas que la presentan; sin embargo, muchos estudios han mostrado que la DV no sólo se caracteriza por los cambios cognitivos, sino que también se ha encontrado una alta prevalencia de síntomas comportamentales y psicológicos (BPSD), aspecto que ha permitido pensar que la ECV juega un papel importante en la génesis de éstos síntomas. Los BPSD son comunes en estadios moderados y severos de la DV, con una prevalencia del 90%, se manifiestan de forma heterogénea (trastornos afectivos, agresividad, irritabilidad, apatía, psicosis, trastornos de ansiedad, deshinibición, depresión, paranoia, alteraciones del sueño, hipersexualidad) y han sido asociados con afecciones de los sistemas fronto-subcorticales del cerebro, lo cual se relaciona con alteraciones en las funciones ejecutivas desde el dominio comportamental. A pesar de la importancia que tienen los síntomas BPSD en DV, su estudio ha sido realmente poco ya que los autores se han centrado en investigarlos en EA, llevando incluso a que no exista una claridad respecto a la forma de nombrar dichos síntomas. Este artículo pretende conocer las características de los síntomas comportamentales y psicológicos (BPSD) en la Demencia Vascular, considerando la magnitud de la incapacidad que generan en los pacientes y el impacto no sólo en el sujeto sino en la sociedad; para ello se abordarán algunos conceptos generales sobre la DV, luego se presentarán las características de BPSD en DV, logrando con esto realizar una exposición de los artículos empíricos publicados por diversos autores respecto al tema. /Abstract: Vascular Dementia (VaD) is the second most frequent cause of dementia after Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), causing cognitive and social-labor impairment in the persons being affected; furthermore, many studies have demonstrated that VaD is not only characterized by cognitive changes, it has also been found a high prevalence of behavioral and psychological symptoms (BPSD), an aspect that have lead us to think that the Cerebrovascular Disease plays a major role in the genesis of these symptoms. The BPSD are common in the moderate and severe stages of VaD, with a prevalence of 90%, its manifested in a heterogeneous form (affective disorders, aggression, irritability, apathy, psychosis, anxiety disorders, disinhibition, depression, paranoia, sleep alterations, hypersexuality) and have been associated with relation to the frontal-subcortical of the brain, which is related with the alterations in the executive functions since the dominant behavioral. In consideration of the importance that the BPSD symptoms have in VaD, its study have been little, due to the fact that its authors have centered its investigations on AD, even reaching a point where there doesn’t exist any clarity on the form to name such symptoms. This article pretends to expand information on the characteristics and influence of the behavioral and psychological symptoms (BPSD) of Vascular Dementia, considering the magnitude of incapacity that generates in patients and the impact not only on the individual but also in society; hence, some general concepts about VaD are going to be taken in consideration, after the characteristics of BPSD in VaD are going to be presented, with this obtaining recognition in an exposition of the empirical articles published by several authors in respect of the theme.Universidad católica de Pereira.
