The description and analysis of the use and the appropriation of the materials in this community, allows to extend the discussion concerning the legitimacy and the technological conditions that affect in the increase of the vulnerability of the construction.El artículo, a partir de los resultados del estudio “Caracterización de la vivienda localizada en los bordes del Río Otún, zona urbana de los Municipios de Pereira y Dosquebradas”, expone las condiciones actuales de los asentamientos citados en el estudio de caso. Conocer y analizar los procesos de formación y consolidación de la vivienda informal que ocupa los bordes del rio Otún en su tramo urbano desde los aspectos constructivos y su relación con la situación socio-económica de las familias que la habitan, son el punto central; los resultados se presentan como recomendaciones para la creación de criterios y mecanismos de intervención de zonas vulnerables por riesgo hidrológico sustentables para la región.
