The theoretical framework addressed the implementation of initiatives related to processes of participatory mapping allow emphasize that mapping is an opportunity for making visible urban imaginary and the relationship between citizens and the city, it is also an opportunity to recognize the reality from another perspective. It is a methodological process from the tools provided by communication and design that allows a contribution to the formation of the territory image.El artículo aborda la cartografía participativa como instrumento para el relevamiento de información relacionada con la interacción entre el ciudadano y el entorno urbano. Se desarrolla una revisión teórica del tema, que se apoya de referentes metodológicos en tres casos de estudio en Córdoba, París y Colombia, los cuales son articulados a la revisión de experiencias de mapeo en el Grupo de Investigación Xisqua de la Universidad de Boyacá. Mapear es una oportunidad para hacer visibles y tangibles los imaginarios urbanos y la relación del ciudadano con la ciudad.
