It is shown that Saramago's approach in is rather associable to a luddistic spirit than to his affinities with communist thinking.Tras reconocer la gran comprensión del funcionamiento del sistema económico que José Saramago demuestra en toda su obra literaria, este artículo critica la visión fatalista del mercado que se manifiesta en su novela , resaltando elementos valiosos del sistema que fueron excluidos de esta obra y ponderando el proceso de destrucción creativa estudiado por Schumpeter como uno de los pilares más importantes del progreso material y humano.
