Description
Summary:Universidad del Quindío has a student selection process that is based on the “SABER” test, to filter and select those students with the highest scores. The University seeks to retain students, this purpose has specialized programs that provide integral support for the maintenance and welfare of them, which helps to reduce the phenomenon called desertion. The professor Luis Hernando Hurtado works reducing the desertion in this institution, where this research was supported; professor Hurtado identified critical factors that ended at the student desertion. To complement this research, the planning and development department, provided the information of those students who left the career before they finished, thus being able to study and identify the causes of their desertion. For research purposes a sample was taken from 84 deserters belonging to the cohort 2007-I, and made telephone interviews. The interviews showed that, although most made the decision to go to University on their own, they would leave early to change to another or simply left because they disliked. This shows that there is a flaw in the selection of students, since they enter with profiles that do not reflect the ideal for the career that they choose. What is proposed is to implement a test that identifies the skills and abilities of each applicant, similar to Universidad Nacional test, which allows the selection of those students who meet the profiles of each career, in order to reduce desertion and to grant that university graduations are of the highest quality.
