La investigación fue realizada en el Colegio Laura Vicuña de Armenia. El grupo de estudiantes del grado Noveno estuvo de acuerdo en ser observado en sus clases. Utilizando un reporte académico, un grupo de cinco estudiantes fue seleccionado para ser entrevistado, al igual que la profesora de inglés. Este estudio comprende datos cualitativos, los cuales fueron recolectados a partir de observaciones, incluyendo una serie de entrevistas grabadas a la profesora y un grupo selecto de estudiantes. Los hallazgos de este estudio sobre el aprendizaje del inglés como lengua extranjera indicaron que se pudo determinar el contexto social de los estudiantes a partir de la forma en la que trataban a sus compañeros y las expresiones que utilizaban a la hora de expresarse. El contexto en el que ellos vivían efectivamente jugó un rol importante en su desempeño académico a la hora de ver sus clases de inglés, desde que este se pudo determinar a partir de sus expresiones orales y el ambiente donde viven teniendo en cuenta el sector donde residen. Todos estos factores se compararon con las notas finales que obtuvieron y todo estuvo en concordancia. Hubo también algunos factores importantes que surgieron de nuestra investigación como el uso de la tecnología y la administración gubernamental que se está aplicando en colegios públicos, que pueden requerir futuras investigaciones.This study aimed at analyzing the influence of the social context in the learning of English as a foreign language. The research was conducted in the Laura Vicuña’s school in Armenia. The group of students in the 9th grade agreed to be observed in their classes. By using an academic report, a group of five students was selected in order to be interviewed, as well as the English teacher. This study comprises the qualitative data which were collected through observations, including a series of recorded interviews to the teacher and a selected group of students. The findings of this EFL learning study indicated that the social context of the students could be determined by their way of treating other classmates and the expressions they used when they spoke to each other. The context in which they lived effectively played an important role in their academic performance in EFL learning, since it was determined by their oral expressions and the environment in which they live taking into account their place of residence. All these factors were compared to the final grades they got and everything was consistent. There were also some other important factors that emerged from our investigation such as the use of technology and the government management that is being applied in public schools that may require further research.Acknowledgements 3 Abstract 4 1.
