Identifying individuals with metabolic syndrome is important due to its association with an increased risk of coronary heart disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Attention has focused on the visceral adipose tissue production of cytokines (adipokines) in metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus, as the levels of the anti-inflammatory adipokine adiponectin are decreased, while proinflammatory cytokines are elevated, creating a proinflammatory state associated with insulin resistance and endothelial dysfunction. In this review, we will give special attention to the role of the leptin/adiponectin ratio. We have previously demonstrated that in individuals with severe coronary artery disease, abdominal obesity was uniquely related to decreased plasma concentrations of adiponectin and increased leptin levels. Leptin/adiponectin imbalance was associated with increased waist circumference and a decreased vascular response to acetylcholine and increased vasoconstriction due to angiotensin II. Leptin and adiponectin have opposite effects on subclinical inflammation and insulin resistance. Leptin upregulates proinflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6; these are associated with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus. In contrast, adiponectin has anti-inflammatory properties and downregulates the expression and release of a number of proinflammatory immune mediators. Therefore, it appears that interactions between angiotensin II and leptin/adiponectin imbalance may be important mediators of the elevated risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases associated with abdominal obesity.application/pdf10.1515/hmbci-2013-00531868-18911868-1883https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/handle/001/3554engHormone Molecular Biology and Clinical InvestigationDerechos Reservados - Hormone Molecular Biology and Clinical Investigation, 2014info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessAtribución-NoComercial 4.0 Internacional (CC BY-NC 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_abf2https://www.degruyter.com/downloadpdf/j/hmbci.2014.18.issue-1/hmbci-2013-0053/hmbci-2013-0053.pdfAdiponectinAngiotensin IILeptinMetabolic syndromeType 2 diabetesThe role of leptin/adiponectin ratio in metabolic syndrome and diabetesArtículo de revistahttp://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_2df8fbb1Textinfo:eu-repo/semantics/articlehttp://purl.org/redcol/resource_type/ARTinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionhttp://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85PublicationTHUMBNAILThe role of leptin adiponectin ratio in metabolic syndrome and diabetes.pdf.jpgThe role of leptin adiponectin ratio in metabolic syndrome and diabetes.pdf.jpgGenerated Thumbnailimage/jpeg1789https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/06119415-d1d3-459e-a13c-addf8995e5c9/downloadca8aee9f51cf6f728d763124c27636b6MD54The role of leptin.adiponectin ratio in metabolic syndrome and diabetes.pdf.jpgThe role of leptin.adiponectin ratio in metabolic syndrome and diabetes.pdf.jpgGenerated Thumbnailimage/jpeg1581https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/89445136-3a91-4249-ae71-2d56c4181390/download97a3ca05c959482722da847f416738e5MD57TEXTThe role of leptin adiponectin ratio in metabolic syndrome and diabetes.pdf.txtThe role of leptin adiponectin ratio in metabolic syndrome and diabetes.pdf.txtExtracted texttext/plain48897https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/6b6768fd-5f9e-493e-8e3b-391763b5ee0c/download3debca8f00b2a9181ed18fbcd043b680MD53The role of leptin.adiponectin ratio in metabolic syndrome and diabetes.pdf.txtThe role of leptin.adiponectin ratio in metabolic syndrome and diabetes.pdf.txtExtracted texttext/plain2https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/1dd2601e-d153-4c45-82a8-894e8d536602/downloadd784fa8b6d98d27699781bd9a7cf19f0MD56LICENSElicense.txtlicense.txttext/plain; charset=utf-859https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/0b79e4d8-9b47-40ec-aec5-9a1058ecd0a8/download38d94cf55aa1bf2dac1a736ac45c881cMD52ORIGINALThe role of leptin.adiponectin ratio in metabolic syndrome and diabetes.pdfThe role of leptin.adiponectin ratio in metabolic syndrome and diabetes.pdfapplication/pdf190565https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/3220ccbc-5663-4a20-aba3-08690379702b/download12d9ff081efff292de76fcd8b2ba21f2MD55001/3554oai:repositorio.udes.edu.co:001/35542023-10-10 08:49:59.231https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/Derechos Reservados - Hormone Molecular Biology and Clinical Investigation, 2014https://repositorio.udes.edu.coRepositorio Universidad de Santandersoporte@metabiblioteca.comTGljZW5jaWEgZGUgUHVibGljYWNpw7NuIFVERVMKRGlyZWN0cmljZXMgZGUgVVNPIHkgQUNDRVNPCgo= |
