Su contaminación la convierte en un vehículo de transmisión de agentes patógenos, que pueden relacionarse con enfermedades gastrointestinales, las cuales causan altas tasas de morbi-mortalidad, siendo esto un problema de salud pública a nivel global. El objetivo es revisar el estado actual de la literatura científica sobre la correlación que existe entre la presencia de agentes infecciosos de tipo viral y bacteriano con la calidad del agua de consumo humano. Materiales y métodos: Se realizó la búsqueda de artículos en las bases de datos como Scopus, Pubmed, Science Direct y Lilacs, teniendo en cuenta algunos términos de búsqueda en inglés. Además, se establecieron criterios de inclusión para la selección de documentos y artículos referenciados. Resultados: Los patógenos bacterianos capaces de sobrevivir y reproducirse en el agua incluyen Escherichia coli, Vibrio cholerae, Shigella spp, Salmonella spp, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter spp, Enterococcus spp, Aeromonas spp y Campylobacter jejuni. Del mismo modo, dentro de los principales virus de transmisión hídrica se encuentran adenovirus, enterovirus, virus de la hepatitis A y E, norovirus y rotavirus. Todos ellos responsables de desórdenes gastrointestinales como diarrea, cólera, disentería bacilar y hepatitis. Conclusiones: Las bacterias son las principales causas de infecciones gastrointestinales transmitidas a través del agua potable. Lo que se aprecia menos son los virus en estas mismas fuentes de agua y su impacto en la salud humana.Introduction: Water is an indispensable resource for man. Its contamination makes it a vehicle for the transmission of pathogens, which can be related to gastrointestinal diseases, which cause high rates of morbidity and mortality, this being a public health problem at a global level. The objective is to review the current state of the scientific literature on the correlation that exists between the presence of infectious agents of the viral and bacterial type with the quality of water for human consumption. Materials and methods: A search for articles was carried out in databases such as Scopus, Pubmed, ScienceDirect and Lilacs, taking into account some search terms in English. In addition, inclusion criteria were established for the selection of referenced documents and articles. Results: Bacterial pathogens capable of surviving and reproducing in water include Escherichia coli, Vibrio cholerae, Shigella spp, Salmonella spp, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter spp, Enterococcus spp, Aeromonas spp, and Campylobacter jejuni.
