La identificación de los genes mcr localizados en plásmidos, han elevado las preocupaciones globales debido a su potencial de transferencia horizontal, facilitando la diseminación de la resistencia a la colistina entre diversas especies bacterianas. Este fenómeno representa una amenaza significativa para la salud pública, ya que reduce las opciones terapéuticas disponibles para tratar infecciones por bacterias Gramnegativas resistentes. En Colombia, el hallazgo del gen mcr-1 en 2016 marcó un hito importante, subrayando la urgencia de monitorear estos determinantes genéticos de resistencia principalmente en el contexto de la industria avícola. Metodología. Se realizó un análisis fenotípico y genotípico en 120 cepas de E. coli aisladas de pollos broiler. Se emplearon pruebas como Colistin Agar Spot Test y Microdilución para determinar la resistencia fenotípica a la colistina y se realizaron PCR múltiples para la amplificación de los genes mcr-1 al mcr-10. Resultados. De las 120 cepas, 31 mostraron resistencia a la colistina. Se confirmó la presencia de los genes mcr-1 en 6 cepas y mcr-10 en una cepa. Esto marca la primera descripción de mcr-10 en Colombia. Conclusión. La detección de genes mcr, incluyendo mcr-10, resalta la evolución de la resistencia antimicrobiana. Se subraya la necesidad de vigilancia continua y mejores prácticas de bioseguridad en la industria avícola, así como la importancia de la cooperación entre los sectores de salud pública, veterinaria y ambiental.Introduction. The identification of mcr genes located on plasmids has raised global concerns due to their potential for horizontal transfer, facilitating the spread of colistin resistance among various bacterial species. This phenomenon represents a significant threat to public health as it reduces the therapeutic options available for treating infections caused by resistant Gram-negative bacteria. In Colombia, the discovery of the mcr-1 gene in 2016 marked an important milestone, underscoring the urgency of monitoring these genetic determinants of resistance, especially in the context of the poultry industry. Methodology. A phenotypic and genotypic analysis was performed on 120 E. coli strains isolated from broiler chickens. Tests such as the Colistin Agar Spot Test and Microdilution were employed to determine phenotypic resistance to colistin, and multiple PCR assays were conducted for the amplification of mcr-1 to mcr-10 genes. Results. Of the 120 strains, 31 showed resistance to colistin. The presence of mcr-1 genes was confirmed in 6 strains and mcr-10 in one strain. This marks the first description of mcr-10 in Colombia.
