Published reference ranges for HGS are mostly derived from Caucasian populations in high-income countries. There is a paucity of information on normative HGS values in non-Caucasian populations from low- or middle-income countries. The objective of this study was to develop reference HGS ranges for healthy adults from a broad range of ethnicities and socioeconomically diverse geographic regions. Methods HGS was measured using a Jamar dynamometer in 125,462 healthy adults aged 35-70 years from 21 countries in the Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiology (PURE) study. Results HGS values differed among individuals from different geographic regions. HGS values were highest among those from Europe/North America, lowest among those from South Asia, South East Asia and Africa, and intermediate among those from China, South America, and the Middle East. Reference ranges stratified by geographic region, age, and sex are presented. These ranges varied from a median (25th–75th percentile) 50 kg (43–56 kg) in men <40 years from Europe/North America to 18 kg (14–20 kg) in women >60 years from South East Asia. Reference ranges by ethnicity and body-mass index are also reported. Conclusions Individual HGS measurements should be interpreted using region/ethnic-specific reference ranges.application/pdf10.1002/jcsm.121122190-6009https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/handle/001/3224engJournal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and MuscleDerechos Reservados - Universidad de Santander, 2016info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessAtribución-NoComercial 4.0 Internacional (CC BY-NC 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_abf2http://myopenia.org/documents/1605/Reference%20ranges%20of%20handgrip%20strength%20from%20125,462%20healthy%20adults%20in%2021%20countries-a%20prospective%20urban%20rural%20epidemiologic%20(PURE)%20study.pdfHandgrip strengthMuscle strengthReference rangeNormative rangeReference valueReference ranges of handgrip strength from 125,462 healthy adults in 21 countries : A prospective urban rural epidemiologic (PURE) studyArtículo de revistahttp://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_2df8fbb1Textinfo:eu-repo/semantics/articlehttp://purl.org/redcol/resource_type/ARTinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionhttp://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85PublicationTHUMBNAILReference ranges of handgrip strength from 125,462 healthy adults in 21 countries. a prospective urban rural epidemiologic (PURE) study.pdf.jpgReference ranges of handgrip strength from 125,462 healthy adults in 21 countries. a prospective urban rural epidemiologic (PURE) study.pdf.jpgGenerated Thumbnailimage/jpeg1787https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/e8403a25-5180-4053-a12d-6b949b74e7f2/downloada492ebad5640240275e3fe016f4d1061MD54Reference ranges of handgrip strength from 125,462 healthy adults in 21 countries A prospective urban rural epidemiologic (PURE) study.pdf.jpgReference ranges of handgrip strength from 125,462 healthy adults in 21 countries A prospective urban rural epidemiologic (PURE) study.pdf.jpgGenerated Thumbnailimage/jpeg16177https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/e099c995-6ac9-47f9-a8d6-ddfcad5d2a1a/downloada4b326acd9ad022512b6a852fa3944d0MD57LICENSElicense.txtlicense.txttext/plain; charset=utf-859https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/587b7894-dd30-42a5-87a3-83bbbba3dfcd/download38d94cf55aa1bf2dac1a736ac45c881cMD52ORIGINALReference ranges of handgrip strength from 125,462 healthy adults in 21 countries A prospective urban rural epidemiologic (PURE) study.pdfArtículo Principalapplication/pdf246550https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/e9c55686-0e78-4807-9e60-cfb0cab6bb95/downloadf2b254e657c57c447bc7d039f2e87f02MD55TEXTReference ranges of handgrip strength from 125,462 healthy adults in 21 countries. a prospective urban rural epidemiologic (PURE) study.pdf.txtReference ranges of handgrip strength from 125,462 healthy adults in 21 countries. a prospective urban rural epidemiologic (PURE) study.pdf.txtExtracted texttext/plain46542https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/d6103ec0-abc6-4545-9cd6-64cc6060dc91/download0825c7ffe4f1aaab77451c41c540e3b5MD53Reference ranges of handgrip strength from 125,462 healthy adults in 21 countries A prospective urban rural epidemiologic (PURE) study.pdf.txtReference ranges of handgrip strength from 125,462 healthy adults in 21 countries A prospective urban rural epidemiologic (PURE) study.pdf.txtExtracted texttext/plain53047https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/e8b1b415-ccfc-4577-b9ae-d56b68e45fd5/download9e4304980ba11275214c7a7ee763e0faMD56001/3224oai:repositorio.udes.edu.co:001/32242023-10-10 08:57:04.223https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/Derechos Reservados - Universidad de Santander, 2016https://repositorio.udes.edu.coRepositorio Universidad de Santandersoporte@metabiblioteca.comTGljZW5jaWEgZGUgUHVibGljYWNpw7NuIFVERVMKRGlyZWN0cmljZXMgZGUgVVNPIHkgQUNDRVNPCgo= |
