Study design Prueba SER is cross-sectional survey of schoolchildren in Bogota, Colombia. Mass, stature, muscular fitness (standing long-jump, handgrip), and cardiorespiratory fitness (20-m shuttle run) were measured in 52 187 schoolchildren 14-16 years of age. Area-level SES was categorized from 1 (very low) to 4 (high) and parent-reported family income was categorized as low, middle, or high. Results Converting measures into z scores showed stature, muscular, and cardiorespiratory fitness were significantly (z = 0.3-0.7) below European values. Children in the mid- and high SES groups jumped significantly further than groups with very low SES. Differences were independent of sex but became nonsignificant when adjusted for anthropometric differences. Participants in the mid-SES and high-SES groups had better handgrip scores when adjusted for body dimension. There were, however, no significant between-group differences in cardiorespiratory fitness, which was strongly clustered by school and significantly greater in students from private schools. Conclusions Area-level SES is associated with measures of muscular fitness in Colombian schoolchildren. These associations were largely explained by the large differences in body dimensions observed between SES groups. When area-level SES is considered, there was no evidence that family income influenced fitness. The clustering of outcomes reaffirms the potential importance of schools and area-level factors in promoting fitness through opportunities for physical activity. Interventions implemented in schools, can improve academic attainment; a factor likely to be important in promoting the social mobility of children from poorer families.application/pdf10.1016/j.jpeds.2016.12.0580022-3476https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/handle/001/3420engJournal of PediatricsDerechos Reservados - Universidad de Santander, 2017info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessAtribución-NoComercial 4.0 Internacional (CC BY-NC 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_abf2https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0022347616315530?via%3DihubSocioeconomic statusMuscular strengthCardiorespiratory fitnessSchool childrenEpidemiologyThe Relationship between Socioeconomic Status, Family Income, and Measures of Muscular and Cardiorespiratory Fitness in Colombian SchoolchildrenArtículo de revistahttp://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_2df8fbb1Textinfo:eu-repo/semantics/articlehttp://purl.org/redcol/resource_type/ARTinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionhttp://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85PublicationBRANDED_PREVIEWThe Relationship between Socioeconomic Status, Family Income, and Measures of Muscular and Cardiorespiratory Fitness in Colombian Schoolchildren.PNG.preview.jpgThe Relationship between Socioeconomic Status, Family Income, and Measures of Muscular and Cardiorespiratory Fitness in Colombian Schoolchildren.PNG.preview.jpgGenerated Branded Previewimage/jpeg6077https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/e9f5ba4a-510e-4b03-86f0-1fd64613f293/download8608fdc20b402c52cb0c429e0ae90860MD54THUMBNAILThe Relationship between Socioeconomic Status, Family Income, and Measures of Muscular and Cardiorespiratory Fitness in Colombian Schoolchildren.PNG.jpgThe Relationship between Socioeconomic Status, Family Income, and Measures of Muscular and Cardiorespiratory Fitness in Colombian Schoolchildren.PNG.jpgUDESimage/jpeg1499https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/a6bd3767-7922-45bc-9ed0-fea239f1f811/download95aa344f9c8acf5800494bb86b2cd2a4MD53The Relationship between Socioeconomic Status, Family Income, and Measures of Muscular and Cardiorespiratory Fitness in Colombian Schoolchildren.pdf.jpgThe Relationship between Socioeconomic Status, Family Income, and Measures of Muscular and Cardiorespiratory Fitness in Colombian Schoolchildren.pdf.jpgGenerated Thumbnailimage/jpeg5888https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/bda7834a-85b6-4a6b-beca-5b1a9b7bc0d5/download77301c22b88f5f7418bb850bf010189fMD57LICENSElicense.txtlicense.txttext/plain; charset=utf-859https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/13e7c6fb-ccbf-44b7-a8fb-6e10289c9b84/download38d94cf55aa1bf2dac1a736ac45c881cMD52ORIGINALThe Relationship between Socioeconomic Status, Family Income, and Measures of Muscular and Cardiorespiratory Fitness in Colombian Schoolchildren.pdfThe Relationship between Socioeconomic Status, Family Income, and Measures of Muscular and Cardiorespiratory Fitness in Colombian Schoolchildren.pdfapplication/pdf240730https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/f625e03e-7408-4fc9-9327-ef3f80b5f466/download89c5dfa0dc0fa44b4d14319183a54943MD55TEXTThe Relationship between Socioeconomic Status, Family Income, and Measures of Muscular and Cardiorespiratory Fitness in Colombian Schoolchildren.pdf.txtThe Relationship between Socioeconomic Status, Family Income, and Measures of Muscular and Cardiorespiratory Fitness in Colombian Schoolchildren.pdf.txtExtracted texttext/plain5https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/b62f25c7-e04e-4863-b859-8d37c82c5726/download5dbe86c1111d64f45ba435df98fdc825MD56001/3420oai:repositorio.udes.edu.co:001/34202023-10-10 11:01:16.328https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/Derechos Reservados - Universidad de Santander, 2017https://repositorio.udes.edu.coRepositorio Universidad de Santandersoporte@metabiblioteca.comTGljZW5jaWEgZGUgUHVibGljYWNpw7NuIFVERVMKRGlyZWN0cmljZXMgZGUgVVNPIHkgQUNDRVNPCgo= |
