Therefore the aims of the present study were to describe body composition and physical fitness of a large cohort of Omani school children of both genders, and to investigate the effects of weight status on physical fitness. METHODS: Three hundred and fourteen Omani school children aged 9 to 10 years old took part in anthropometric assessments, body composition and fitness tests, including handgrip strength, the basketball chest pass, broad jump, 20-m sprint, four 10-m shuttle agility, 30-s sit-up, and multistage fitness test (MSFT). RESULTS: Obese boys and girls performed worse than normal-weight children in sprint, agility and endurance. In addition, fitness measures in the overweight group and underweight groups were not significantly different from other groups, except a better handgrip strength and poorer MSFT in overweight compared to normal weight girls, and poorer agility performance in underweight girls compared to the three other groups. CONCLUSIONS: Most fitness measures are lower in obese Omani children, which suggests that they will be more at risk of developing NCDs later in life.Ciencias Médicas y de la Saludapplication/pdf10.23736/S0022-4707.18.08136-71827-19280022-4707https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/handle/001/6834spaItalia329ScopusJournal of Sports Medicine and Physical FitnessCopyright © 2019 EDIZIONI MINERVA MEDICAinfo:eu-repo/semantics/closedAccessAtribución 4.0 Internacional (CC BY 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_14cbhttps://www.minervamedica.it/en/journals/sports-med-physical-fitness/article.php?cod=R40Y2019N03A0440Muscle strengthPhysical enduranceChildAdipose tissuePhysical fitness characteristics of Omani primary school children according to body mass indexArtículo de revistahttp://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_2df8fbb1Textinfo:eu-repo/semantics/articlehttp://purl.org/redcol/resource_type/ARTinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionhttp://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85Todas las AudienciasPublicationORIGINALPhysical fitness characteristics of Omani primary school children according to body mass index.pdfPhysical fitness characteristics of Omani primary school children according to body mass index.pdfapplication/pdf330911https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/013f1a82-1174-42b3-982c-79cc3a3ce534/downloadd33aa71775b8b47537e77aec9c295a7dMD51LICENSElicense.txtlicense.txttext/plain; charset=utf-859https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/5b774d78-f0cf-4c88-9f74-ccd9a46f16b5/download38d94cf55aa1bf2dac1a736ac45c881cMD52TEXTPhysical fitness characteristics of Omani primary school children according to body mass index.pdf.txtPhysical fitness characteristics of Omani primary school children according to body mass index.pdf.txtExtracted texttext/plain5https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/63a23ed5-c419-4530-9939-a77ce2f3c74d/download5dbe86c1111d64f45ba435df98fdc825MD53THUMBNAILPhysical fitness characteristics of Omani primary school children according to body mass index.pdf.jpgPhysical fitness characteristics of Omani primary school children according to body mass index.pdf.jpgGenerated Thumbnailimage/jpeg9260https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/839371c8-b64e-48e9-8088-c16c4b77e9ba/download4f1c6a4e9bf78d4f9c70a043671a8251MD54001/6834oai:repositorio.udes.edu.co:001/68342023-10-10 11:17:28.021https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Copyright © 2019 EDIZIONI MINERVA MEDICAhttps://repositorio.udes.edu.coRepositorio Universidad de Santandersoporte@metabiblioteca.comTGljZW5jaWEgZGUgUHVibGljYWNpw7NuIFVERVMKRGlyZWN0cmljZXMgZGUgVVNPIHkgQUNDRVNPCgo=
