Theoretical studies debating whether phylogeny or universal principles determine development of pinwheels point to V1 size as a critical constraint. Thus, we set out to study maps of agouti, a big diurnal rodent with a V1 size comparable to cats’. In electrophysiology, we detected interspersed orientation and direction-selective neurons with a bias for horizontal contours, corroborated by homogeneous activation in optical imaging. Compatible with spatial clustering at short distance, nearby neurons tended to exhibit similar orientation preference. Our results argue against V1 size as a key parameter in determining the presence of periodic orientation maps. They are consistent with a phylogenetic influence on the map layout and development, potentially reflecting distinct retinal traits or interspecies differences in cortical circuitry.Ciencias Médicas y de la Salud36 papplication/pdfhttps://doi.org/10.1016/ j.isci.2020.1018822589-0042https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/handle/001/6590engEstados Unidos36124Ferreiro et al., iScience 24, 101882 January 22, 2021ScopusiScience(C) 2020 The Author(s).info:eu-repo/semantics/closedAccessAtribución-NoComercial 4.0 Internacional (CC BY-NC 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_14cbhttps://www.cell.com/action/showPdf?pii=S2589-0042%2820%2931079-8Spatial clustering of orientation preference in primary visual cortex of the large rodent agoutiArtículo de revistahttp://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_2df8fbb1Textinfo:eu-repo/semantics/articlehttp://purl.org/redcol/resource_type/ARTinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionhttp://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85PublicationLICENSElicense.txtlicense.txttext/plain; charset=utf-859https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/26c48387-a8a2-4930-be48-a688fa5fb06c/download38d94cf55aa1bf2dac1a736ac45c881cMD52ORIGINALSpatial clustering of orientation preference in primary visual cortex of the large rodent agouti.pdfSpatial clustering of orientation preference in primary visual cortex of the large rodent agouti.pdfapplication/pdf233032https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/14e17947-b50a-4aea-a009-db39c71a2d88/downloadaddf0ef6c09b4af4a37111e3e60dd895MD51TEXTSpatial clustering of orientation preference in primary visual cortex of the large rodent agouti.pdf.txtSpatial clustering of orientation preference in primary visual cortex of the large rodent agouti.pdf.txtExtracted texttext/plain5https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/7040058b-59bd-422a-839f-78d929399246/download5dbe86c1111d64f45ba435df98fdc825MD53THUMBNAILSpatial clustering of orientation preference in primary visual cortex of the large rodent agouti.pdf.jpgSpatial clustering of orientation preference in primary visual cortex of the large rodent agouti.pdf.jpgGenerated Thumbnailimage/jpeg8729https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/5785d983-b48d-47a0-9c3a-7c665eda3ed8/download74fcb3bf2831ee6ed7f018d27c66667aMD54001/6590oai:repositorio.udes.edu.co:001/65902023-10-10 13:19:27.252https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/(C) 2020 The Author(s).https://repositorio.udes.edu.coRepositorio Universidad de Santandersoporte@metabiblioteca.comTGljZW5jaWEgZGUgUHVibGljYWNpw7NuIFVERVMKRGlyZWN0cmljZXMgZGUgVVNPIHkgQUNDRVNPCgo=
