The physiopathologic mechanisms of this association remain unclear, although recently, it has been hypothesized that a decreased production of nitric oxide could be a potential contributor to vascular dysfunction in depressive patients. The objective of this study was to evaluate nitric oxide production and vascular endothelial function in treatment-naive young healthy adults with a first episode of major depression. Methods: A case-control study in 50 treatment-naive young adults with a first episode of major depression and 50 healthy control subjects was conducted. Plasma levels of nitric oxide metabolites (nitrates/nitrites) were determined using a colorimetric assay based on Griess reaction. Endothelial function was assessed by flow-mediated vasodilation measurements after reactive hyperemia. Results: The mean age of the depressed patients was 22.6 (standard deviation [SD], 4.6) years, whereas the controls were 23.4 (SD, 4.8) years. Sixteen men (32%) and 34 women (68%) were included in each group. The plasma nitrite/nitrate concentrations were significantly lower in depressive subjects compared with healthy controls (17.5 [SD, 4.9] Kmol/L versus 21.6 [SD, 7.0] Kmol/L, p G .001); however, flow-mediated vasodilation values were similar in both groups (13.1% [SD, 4.3%] versus 12.1% [SD, 5.0%], p = .10). Conclusions: Decreased plasma concentrations of nitric oxide metabolites are not associated with vascular endothelial dysfunction in young subjects with a first episode of major depression. Reduced nitrate/nitrite levels could reflect a decreased nitric oxide production in the central nervous system of depressed subjects. Further studies are needed to confirm this hypothesis.application/pdf10.1097/PSY.0b013e31821566cf1534-77960033-3174https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/handle/001/3719engPsychosomatic MedicinePsychosomatic Medicine;Volume 73 - Issue 4 - p 344-349, May 2011Derechos Reservados - Psychosomatic Medicine, 2011info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessAtribución-NoComercial 4.0 Internacional (CC BY-NC 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_abf2https://journals.lww.com/psychosomaticmedicine/fulltext/2011/05000/Plasma_Nitrate_Levels_and_Flow_Mediated.9.aspx#pdf-linkMajor depressionEndotheliumBlood flowNitric oxideNervous systemPlasma nitrate levels and flow-mediated vasodilation in untreatedArtículo de revistahttp://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_2df8fbb1Textinfo:eu-repo/semantics/articlehttp://purl.org/redcol/resource_type/ARTinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionhttp://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85PublicationORIGINALPlasma nitrate levels and flow-mediated vasodilation in untreated.pdfPlasma nitrate levels and flow-mediated vasodilation in untreated.pdfapplication/pdf322567https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/a42a8fc2-1af8-4501-809e-49b034625d17/downloadb3d90e5925bb043e7573db5bd83f7f2eMD55LICENSElicense.txtlicense.txttext/plain; charset=utf-859https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/c99298a2-b135-44c0-8f9e-c7fb6e9c21ed/download38d94cf55aa1bf2dac1a736ac45c881cMD52TEXTPlasma nitrate levels and flow-mediated vasodilation in untreated.pdf.txtPlasma nitrate levels and flow-mediated vasodilation in untreated.pdf.txtExtracted texttext/plain40492https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/142158c2-cbfb-4c7e-bd0e-b7db3c596d53/download4c5acff94cff01857c183886ddd0f357MD53THUMBNAILPlasma nitrate levels and flow-mediated vasodilation in untreated.pdf.jpgPlasma nitrate levels and flow-mediated vasodilation in untreated.pdf.jpgGenerated Thumbnailimage/jpeg1736https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/e8b34249-e413-43b0-8526-32a7d770ca3a/download5104c4dc24df2ccc86d51e4bbf50cc3dMD54001/3719oai:repositorio.udes.edu.co:001/37192023-10-09 18:15:25.368https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/Derechos Reservados - Psychosomatic Medicine, 2011https://repositorio.udes.edu.coRepositorio Universidad de Santandersoporte@metabiblioteca.comTGljZW5jaWEgZGUgUHVibGljYWNpw7NuIFVERVMKRGlyZWN0cmljZXMgZGUgVVNPIHkgQUNDRVNPCgo=
