The role of inflammation in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia has been the object of recent studies by our group. We have described elevated levels of inflammatory markers (tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin-6, and C-reactive protein) in preeclamptic patients and demonstrated that Latin-American women present a higher degree of inflammation than women from developed countries. We have results that suggest that chronic subclinical infections and insulin resistance are the most probable causes of the increased inflammation in preeclampsia. Moreover, we showed that early treatment of urinary and vaginal infections decreased the incidence of preeclampsia. We also have evidence that suggests that inflammation leads to endothelial dysfunction, predisposing women to develop preeclampsia. Increased levels of inflammation markers and endothelial dysfunction are found in the early stages of pregnancy in women who later on develop preeclampsia. Appropriate prenatal care programs, including screening and treatment of urinary, vaginal, and periodontal infections in early pregnancy and prevention of factors that predispose to insulin resistance, such as excessive weight gain during pregnancy, may reduce the incidence of preeclampsia in Latin-American women.application/pdf10.1097/MJT.0b013e318164c1491536-36861075-2765https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/handle/001/3690engAmerican Journal of TherapeuticsAmerican Journal of Therapeutics;Vol. 15 (4), pp. 373-376. 2008Derechos Reservados - American Journal of Therapeutics, 2008info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessAtribución-NoComercial 4.0 Internacional (CC BY-NC 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_abf2https://journals.lww.com/americantherapeutics/fulltext/2008/07000/Subclinical_Infection_as_a_Cause_of_Inflammation.15.aspx#pdf-linkPreeclampsiaInflammationInfectionEndotheliumNitric oxideSubclinical infection as a cause of inflammation in preeclampsiaArtículo de revistahttp://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_2df8fbb1Textinfo:eu-repo/semantics/articlehttp://purl.org/redcol/resource_type/ARTinfo:eu-repo/semantics/drafthttp://purl.org/coar/version/c_b1a7d7d4d402bccePublicationORIGINALSubclinical infection as a cause of inflammation in preeclampsia.pdfSubclinical infection as a cause of inflammation in preeclampsia.pdfapplication/pdf277638https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/ab0946ca-da47-4710-bdcc-a2432b628558/download6a458008fd941ef6f69271e399ca220fMD55LICENSElicense.txtlicense.txttext/plain; charset=utf-859https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/572c0947-4627-4eb4-a6e7-50ca9ac6f262/download38d94cf55aa1bf2dac1a736ac45c881cMD52TEXTSubclinical infection as a cause of inflammation in preeclampsia.pdf.txtSubclinical infection as a cause of inflammation in preeclampsia.pdf.txtExtracted texttext/plain15564https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/198e7c01-1912-483b-961b-94be95b3f892/download6a0dafb834b89039dcecc1553a92b427MD53THUMBNAILSubclinical infection as a cause of inflammation in preeclampsia.pdf.jpgSubclinical infection as a cause of inflammation in preeclampsia.pdf.jpgGenerated Thumbnailimage/jpeg1782https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/0eaafdcb-a6b4-4888-8205-91884716eaf8/downloadbb0be52de437c7d418e3f538d30d948aMD54001/3690oai:repositorio.udes.edu.co:001/36902023-10-10 08:31:25.166https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/Derechos Reservados - American Journal of Therapeutics, 2008https://repositorio.udes.edu.coRepositorio Universidad de Santandersoporte@metabiblioteca.comTGljZW5jaWEgZGUgUHVibGljYWNpw7NuIFVERVMKRGlyZWN0cmljZXMgZGUgVVNPIHkgQUNDRVNPCgo=
