In this study, we use a point-process model to determine dynamic autonomic tone in response to negative emotions and its influence on long-term memory of major depressed subjects. Methods Forty-eight patients with major depression and 48 healthy controls were randomly assigned to either neutral or emotionally arousing audiovisual stimuli. An adaptive point-process algorithm was applied to compute instantaneous estimates of the spectral components of heart rate variability [Low frequency (LF), 0.04–0.15 Hz; High frequency (HF), 0.15–0.4 Hz]. Three days later subjects were submitted to a recall test. Results A significant increase in HF power was observed in depressed subjects in response to the emotionally arousing stimulus (p=0.03). The results of a multivariate analysis revealed that the HF power during the emotional segment of the stimulus was independently associated with the score of the recall test in depressed subjects, after adjusting for age, gender and educational level (Coef. 0.003, 95%CI, 0.0009–0.005, p=0.008). Limitations These results could only be interpreted as responses to elicitation of specific negative emotions, the relationship between HF changes and encoding/recall of positive stimuli should be further examined. Conclusions Alterations on parasympathetic response to emotion are involved in the mood-congruent cognitive bias observed in major depression. These findings are clinically relevant because it could constitute the mechanism by which depressed patients maintain maladaptive patterns of negative information processing that trigger and sustain depressed mood.application/pdf10.1016/j.jad.2015.09.0750165-0327https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/handle/001/3475engJournal of Affective DisordersDerechos Reservados - Universidad de Santander, 2016info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessAtribución-NoComercial 4.0 Internacional (CC BY-NC 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_abf2https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0165032715305644?via%3DihubMajor depressionEmotional memoryAutonomic nervous systemVagus nerveHeart rate variabilityPoint-processRelationship between cardiac vagal activity and mood congruent memory bias in major depressionArtículo de revistahttp://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_2df8fbb1Textinfo:eu-repo/semantics/articlehttp://purl.org/redcol/resource_type/ARTinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionhttp://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85PublicationBRANDED_PREVIEWRelationship between cardiac vagal activity and mood congruent memory bias in major depression.PNG.preview.jpgRelationship between cardiac vagal activity and mood congruent memory bias in major depression.PNG.preview.jpgGenerated Branded Previewimage/jpeg5339https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/867dfb19-a5af-44fa-a385-d41616d4bfb6/downloada141c040cc637ca34cfdce7a87fe46ecMD54THUMBNAILRelationship between cardiac vagal activity and mood congruent memory bias in major depression.PNG.jpgRelationship between cardiac vagal activity and mood congruent memory bias in major depression.PNG.jpgUDESimage/jpeg1417https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/f9f79e30-f424-4071-acea-70594f4a416a/downloadc0e2c832dc59264c5f70f259af8b4891MD53Relationship between cardiac vagal activity and mood congruent memory bias in major depression.pdf.jpgRelationship between cardiac vagal activity and mood congruent memory bias in major depression.pdf.jpgGenerated Thumbnailimage/jpeg5400https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/4034940b-91ab-41c9-90bc-ac819bad6b47/downloadea87667ac593f568deb8319f44a3d995MD57LICENSElicense.txtlicense.txttext/plain; charset=utf-859https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/ae4cee87-7653-41e5-ab8a-be1c3fa2d9a6/download38d94cf55aa1bf2dac1a736ac45c881cMD52ORIGINALRelationship between cardiac vagal activity and mood congruent memory bias in major depression.pdfRelationship between cardiac vagal activity and mood congruent memory bias in major depression.pdfapplication/pdf233192https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/c99e298e-f4ac-4393-b6e1-b851feee8401/download5343345c0c5ee93e0d08c42e82344593MD55TEXTRelationship between cardiac vagal activity and mood congruent memory bias in major depression.pdf.txtRelationship between cardiac vagal activity and mood congruent memory bias in major depression.pdf.txtExtracted texttext/plain5https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/6c00d8ba-f308-4a96-a652-9d8a55dfcd31/download5dbe86c1111d64f45ba435df98fdc825MD56001/3475oai:repositorio.udes.edu.co:001/34752023-10-10 13:27:27.839https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/Derechos Reservados - Universidad de Santander, 2016https://repositorio.udes.edu.coRepositorio Universidad de Santandersoporte@metabiblioteca.comTGljZW5jaWEgZGUgUHVibGljYWNpw7NuIFVERVMKRGlyZWN0cmljZXMgZGUgVVNPIHkgQUNDRVNPCgo= |
