Also, there are concerns that erectile dysfunction is worsened by common medications used to treat these risk factors. In this study, we evaluated the effect of: (1) cholesterol-lowering with a statin; (2) pharmacologic blood pressure reduction; and (3) their combination, on erectile function. Methods: A priori, this was a secondary analysis of the Heart Outcomes Prevention Evaluation-3 (HOPE-3) randomized controlled trial. Men were 55 years of age or older with at least 1 cardiovascular risk factor. Erectile function was measured using the erectile function domain of the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-EF) score. Men with incomplete scores, or who did not engage in sexual activity, were excluded. Using a 2 × 2 factorial design, participants were randomized to rosuvastatin (10 mg/d) or placebo, and to candesartan with hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ; 16 mg/12.5 mg/d; Cand+HCTZ) or placebo. Primary outcome was change in IIEF-EF from baseline to end of study follow-up. Results: Two thousand one hundred fifty-three men were included; mean age was 61.5 years, and mean follow-up was 5.8 years. Mean IIEF-EF score at baseline was 23.0 (SD 5.6). Least square mean change in the IIEF-EF score did not differ with rosuvastatin compared with placebo (−1.4; standard error [SE], 0.3 vs −1.5; SE, 0.3; P = 0.74), Cand+HCTZ compared with placebo (−1.6; SE, 0.3 vs −1.3; SE, 0.3; P = 0.10), or combination therapy compared with double placebo (P = 0.35). Conclusions: Cholesterol-lowering using a statin, and blood pressure-lowering using Cand+HCTZ, either alone or in combination, do not improve or adversely affect erectile function.application/pdf10.1016/j.cjca.2017.09.0260828-282Xhttps://repositorio.udes.edu.co/handle/001/3404engCanadian Journal of CardiologyDerechos Reservados - Canadian Journal of Cardiology, 2018info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessAtribución-NoComercial 4.0 Internacional (CC BY-NC 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_abf2https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0828282X17310917?via%3DihubBlood Pressure-LoweringErectile FunctionRisk for Cardiovascular DiseasHOPE-3Long-term Effects of Statins, Blood Pressure-Lowering, and Both on Erectile Function in Persons at Intermediate Risk for Cardiovascular Disease : A Substudy of the Heart Outcomes Prevention Evaluation-3 (HOPE-3) Randomized Controlled TrialArtículo de revistahttp://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_2df8fbb1Textinfo:eu-repo/semantics/articlehttp://purl.org/redcol/resource_type/ARTinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionhttp://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85PublicationTEXTLong-term Effects of Statins, Blood Pressure-Lowering, and Both on Erectile Function in Persons at Intermediate Risk for Cardiovascular Disease.pdf.txtLong-term Effects of Statins, Blood Pressure-Lowering, and Both on Erectile Function in Persons at Intermediate Risk for Cardiovascular Disease.pdf.txtExtracted texttext/plain2https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/7e992880-4511-478f-9c34-033edca36c96/downloadd784fa8b6d98d27699781bd9a7cf19f0MD56BRANDED_PREVIEWLONG-T~1.PNG.preview.jpgLONG-T~1.PNG.preview.jpgGenerated Branded Previewimage/jpeg5785https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/1edac0f2-1e64-42de-a332-27e0dc1ac81b/downloadbfbf86f3247c16594408ef4ee8704a55MD54THUMBNAILLONG-T~1.PNG.jpgLONG-T~1.PNG.jpgUDESimage/jpeg1502https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/84a5d9dd-7df4-44b1-9038-09310c7655d8/download26624db148d8fc25ef648ffe0e2bcf2aMD53Long-term Effects of Statins, Blood Pressure-Lowering, and Both on Erectile Function in Persons at Intermediate Risk for Cardiovascular Disease.pdf.jpgLong-term Effects of Statins, Blood Pressure-Lowering, and Both on Erectile Function in Persons at Intermediate Risk for Cardiovascular Disease.pdf.jpgGenerated Thumbnailimage/jpeg1444https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/8fb78b15-5def-4703-904a-539e0e0d76c3/download0171834d94f66edfa62590a2f0014a5aMD57LICENSElicense.txtlicense.txttext/plain; charset=utf-859https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/b94b33be-ec72-478b-bb0a-e081e06492a0/download38d94cf55aa1bf2dac1a736ac45c881cMD52ORIGINALLong-term Effects of Statins, Blood Pressure-Lowering, and Both on Erectile Function in Persons at Intermediate Risk for Cardiovascular Disease.pdfLong-term Effects of Statins, Blood Pressure-Lowering, and Both on Erectile Function in Persons at Intermediate Risk for Cardiovascular Disease.pdfapplication/pdf253035https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/3cf6f5f8-9b6f-4059-b626-431928c0ecff/download55a2db8f00334ff895d1bf11d6d9e68dMD55001/3404oai:repositorio.udes.edu.co:001/34042023-10-10 08:42:33.771https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/Derechos Reservados - Canadian Journal of Cardiology, 2018https://repositorio.udes.edu.coRepositorio Universidad de Santandersoporte@metabiblioteca.comTGljZW5jaWEgZGUgUHVibGljYWNpw7NuIFVERVMKRGlyZWN0cmljZXMgZGUgVVNPIHkgQUNDRVNPCgo=
