Históricamente, se han empleado antibióticos en la industria aviar como las tetraciclinas, sulfonamidas y macrólidos, como medidas profilácticas o como promotores de crecimiento. Esta práctica contribuye a la selección de bacterias resistentes y puede convertir a las aves en portadoras de estas bacterias. Objetivo: Identificar los genes de resistencia a las tetraciclinas en cepas de Escherichia coli aviar obtenidas de pollos broiler de granjas productoras de Santander. Metodología: Se analizaron un total de 120 cepas de Escherichia coli aviar aisladas de pollos broiler de Santander. Se utilizaron pruebas fenotípicas para determinar la sensibilidad o resistencia a los antibióticos de la familia de las tetraciclinas, así como pruebas genotípicas para amplificar los genes tet(A), tet(B), tet(C), tet(D), tet(E), tet(G), tet(K), tet(L), tet(M), tet(O), tet(A(P)), tet(Q), tet(S), tet(X), y tet(W) asociados con la resistencia a las tetraciclinas. Resultados: Se obtuvo una resistencia fenotípica a la familia de las tetraciclinas del 91,7% las cuales se agruparon por patrones de resistencia y se determinó una mayor prevalencia de genes tet(A) (67,5%), tet(W) (42,5%), tet(E) (19,2%), tet(C) (13,3%) y tet(G) (10%) en los especímenes de E. coli aviar. Para los genes tet(B), tet(K), tet(L), tet(M) y tet(S) mostraron una prevalencia menor, detectados en menos del 6% de las cepas. No se amplificaron los genes tet(D), tet(O), tet(A(P)), tet(Q) y tet(X). Conclusión: La presencia de estos genes de resistencia en un contexto de uso indiscriminado de antibióticos facilita la emergencia y propagación de cepas resistentes de E. coli aviar. Esta situación no solo amenaza la salud humana sino también impacta negativamente en la industria avícola, tanto desde el punto de vista económico como en el fracaso de las terapias antimicrobianas.Introduction: Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario determined that Santander is the primary producer of broiler chickens for human consumption. Historically, antibiotics such as tetracyclines, sulfonamides, and macrolides have been used in the poultry industry as prophylactic measures or growth promoters. This practice contributes to the selection of resistant bacteria and can turn poultry into carriers of these bacteria. Objective: To identify tetracycline resistance genes in avian Escherichia coli strains obtained from broiler chickens in Santander's farming facilities. Methodology: A total of 120 avian Escherichia coli strains isolated from broiler chickens in Santander were analyzed. Phenotypic tests were used to determine sensitivity or resistance to tetracycline family antibiotics, as well as genotypic tests to amplify tet(A), tet(B), tet(C), tet(D), tet(E), tet(G), tet(K), tet(L), tet(M), tet(O), tet(A(P)), tet(Q), tet(S), tet(X), and tet(W) genes associated with tetracycline resistance. Results: A phenotypic resistance to the tetracycline family was observed in 91.7% of the strains, which were grouped by resistance patterns. A higher prevalence of tet(A) (67.5%), tet(W) (42.5%), tet(E) (19.2%), tet(C) (13.3%), and tet(G) (10%) genes was determined in the avian E. coli specimens. The genes tet(B), tet(K), tet(L), tet(M), and tet(S) showed lower prevalence, detected in less than 6% of the strains. The genes tet(D), tet(O), tet(A(P)), tet(Q), and tet(X) were not amplified. Conclusion: The presence of these resistance genes in a context of unregulated antibiotic use facilitates the emergence and spread of resistant strains of avian E. coli.
