Yeast and bacterial isolates were obtained from solid and liquid wastes from a grease trap of a palm oil refining process, based on their ability to use palm oil as sole carbon source in solid medium. Molecular identification of microorganisms was performed by PCR techniques, revealing that isolates corresponded to Candida and Bacillus species, with a high degree of similarity with reported O&G-degrading organisms. Five out of these isolates showed lipolytic activity evidenced by changes in the turbidity, colour and produced a substantial decrease in O&G concentrations in liquid MBS cultures containing palm oil. These isolates promoted the highest O&G decrease in POME samples with 56 %, 77 %, 78 %, 76 % and 79 % O&G removal after 72 hours respectively. A microbial consortia composed of five degrading yeasts produced a O&G reduction up to 84 % in POME samples after 48 hours, evidencing a synergic effect of the microorganisms. The results of this study showed that bioaugmentation of polluted wastewaters from palm oil extraction with native microorganisms isolated from oily residues can be efficiently used to greatly improve the removal of grease, oils and organic matter.application/pdfRodriguez Z., Agualimpia B., Zafra G., 2016, Isolation and molecular characterization of microorganisms with potential for the degradation of oil and grease from palm oil refinery wastes, Chemical Engineering Transactions, 49, 517-522 DOI: 10.3303/CET164908710.3303/CET1649061978-88-95608-40-22283-9216https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/handle/001/3463engChemical Engineering TransactionsDerechos Reservados - Universidad de Santanderinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessAtribución-NoComercial 4.0 Internacional (CC BY-NC 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_abf2https://www.researchgate.net/publication/301543778_Isolation_and_Molecular_Characterization_of_Microorganisms_with_Potential_for_the_Degradation_of_Oil_and_Grease_from_Palm_Oil_Refinery_Wastes/link/571b87aa08ae7f552a4813b8/downloadIsolationMicroorganismsDegradationOilGreasePalm OilRefinery WastesIsolation and Molecular characterization of microorganisms with potential for the degradation of oil and grease from palm oil refinery wastesArtículo de revistahttp://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_2df8fbb1Textinfo:eu-repo/semantics/articlehttp://purl.org/redcol/resource_type/ARTinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionhttp://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85PublicationTHUMBNAILIsolation and Molecular characterization of microorganisms with potential for the degradation of oil and grease from palm oil refinery wastes.pdf.jpgIsolation and Molecular characterization of microorganisms with potential for the degradation of oil and grease from palm oil refinery wastes.pdf.jpgGenerated Thumbnailimage/jpeg1634https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/9626c55e-7250-4882-afee-c9b85fc3c893/download7ac0ba88b0fa95b1fa153ff3f7cdc074MD54ORIGINALIsolation and Molecular characterization of microorganisms with potential for the degradation of oil and grease from palm oil refinery wastes.pdfIsolation and Molecular characterization of microorganisms with potential for the degradation of oil and grease from palm oil refinery wastes.pdfapplication/pdf261708https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/82512855-ea72-4ff5-8d09-674f2634ae6a/download422e5cdc38caa8295e8a4668157abbb4MD55TEXTIsolation and Molecular characterization of microorganisms with potential for the degradation of oil and grease from palm oil refinery wastes.pdf.txtIsolation and Molecular characterization of microorganisms with potential for the degradation of oil and grease from palm oil refinery wastes.pdf.txtExtracted texttext/plain23908https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/f0128f9b-537f-4913-b1b7-ff457a8633df/download9743af733beff3d8978447141eaa0658MD53LICENSElicense.txtlicense.txttext/plain; charset=utf-859https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/a3f46a45-b3e6-4c0b-b5b2-c0d125615e6e/download38d94cf55aa1bf2dac1a736ac45c881cMD52001/3463oai:repositorio.udes.edu.co:001/34632023-10-11 10:17:45.986https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/Derechos Reservados - Universidad de Santanderhttps://repositorio.udes.edu.coRepositorio Universidad de Santandersoporte@metabiblioteca.comTGljZW5jaWEgZGUgUHVibGljYWNpw7NuIFVERVMKRGlyZWN0cmljZXMgZGUgVVNPIHkgQUNDRVNPCgo=
