Methods A cross-sectional study was performed in Bogotá, Colombia, during 2006 in 263 males from the Colombian Air Force (age range 29–54 years). Anthropometric measurements and biochemical determinations (glycemia, lipid profile, insulin, and HOMA-IR) were obtained in order to determine the presence of metabolic syndrome (MS) criteria and insulin resistance in this population. In addition, ultrasound studies were performed to evaluate the presence of NAFLD. Results NAFLD was detected in 26.6% (n = 70) of the subjects. Thirty four individuals had complete MS criteria (48.5%). The presence of NAFLD was associated with higher insulin levels (11.0 ± 5.1 vs. 6.6 ± 3.6, p = 0.001), and its prevalence increased from 11% (n = 8), to 24% (n = 17) to 64% (n = 45) from the lowest to the highest HOMA-IR tertile. Body mass index, triglycerides and subcutaneous and visceral fat were found to be independent predictors of NAFLD. Conclusions These results suggest that NAFLD is associated with insulin resistance and extrahepatic adiposity in nondiabetic young Hispanic population.application/pdf10.1016/j.ypmed.2010.11.0210091-7435https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/handle/001/3669engPreventive MedicinePreventive Medicine;Volume 52, Issue 2, 1 February 2011, Pages 174-177Derechos Reservados - Preventive Medicine, 2011info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessAtribución-NoComercial 4.0 Internacional (CC BY-NC 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_abf2https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0091743510004767?via%3DihubMetabolic syndromeFatty liver diseaseInsulin resistanceHispanic populationNonalcoholic fatty liver disease is associated with insulin resistance in a young Hispanic populationArtículo de revistahttp://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_2df8fbb1Textinfo:eu-repo/semantics/articlehttp://purl.org/redcol/resource_type/ARTinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionhttp://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85PublicationLICENSElicense.txtlicense.txttext/plain; charset=utf-859https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/aa6a1e57-2370-465d-953d-95034cc088c9/download38d94cf55aa1bf2dac1a736ac45c881cMD52ORIGINALNonalcoholic fatty liver disease is associated with insulin resistance in a young Hispanic population.pdfNonalcoholic fatty liver disease is associated with insulin resistance in a young Hispanic population.pdfapplication/pdf242688https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/f504952b-2dbd-492e-8838-f3ca227c294a/download990c3092cd7d6bd529ee8aecaee2e521MD55THUMBNAILNonalcoholic fatty liver disease is associated with insulin resistance in a young Hispanic population.PNG.jpgNonalcoholic fatty liver disease is associated with insulin resistance in a young Hispanic population.PNG.jpgGenerated Thumbnailimage/jpeg1419https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/d6ab7836-270a-44a3-8670-213f58719a6d/downloade5e396be4e64b64dec4a80046fa62515MD54Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is associated with insulin resistance in a young Hispanic population.pdf.jpgNonalcoholic fatty liver disease is associated with insulin resistance in a young Hispanic population.pdf.jpgGenerated Thumbnailimage/jpeg1498https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/1fb92a95-9f0e-4ce5-8789-243393e10210/download80b3ff4a9d9aeedd826e552b2d1bb1eaMD57TEXTNonalcoholic fatty liver disease is associated with insulin resistance in a young Hispanic population.pdf.txtNonalcoholic fatty liver disease is associated with insulin resistance in a young Hispanic population.pdf.txtExtracted texttext/plain2https://repositorio.udes.edu.co/bitstreams/7fff1066-c479-40c1-9f2d-3948a0ed9b13/downloadd784fa8b6d98d27699781bd9a7cf19f0MD56001/3669oai:repositorio.udes.edu.co:001/36692023-10-09 18:17:50.894https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/Derechos Reservados - Preventive Medicine, 2011https://repositorio.udes.edu.coRepositorio Universidad de Santandersoporte@metabiblioteca.comTGljZW5jaWEgZGUgUHVibGljYWNpw7NuIFVERVMKRGlyZWN0cmljZXMgZGUgVVNPIHkgQUNDRVNPCgo=
