Las niñas y los niños del destierro. Indígenas y afrodescendientes en la ciudad

According to an official report by the United Nations (UN), Colombia is the country with the second-biggest forced displacement situation in the world. This is an old, complex phenomenon that reflect dramatically on the situation of indigenous and afro-descendant children in the contemporary urban environments to which families and communities from different regions of the country have been banished. This paper aims to raise awareness among the community of teachers, teacher educators and researchers in education about the rights of these children in the school system of cities like Bogotá. We use some testimonies that reflect the difficult and unequal circumstances that many of these boys and girls face in urban schools and their pedagogical cultures in order to highlight the school’s role in the rightful treatment of their cultural, linguistic and ethnic differences. It is a reflection on the underlying racism and discrimination in a Colombian school system and how it affects the lives of boys and girls.
