En la población pediátrica el virus sincitial respiratorio (VSR), el virus de parainfluenza e influenza han sido considerados durante muchos años los principales agentes etiológicos en infección respiratoria aguda baja. En el 2001 el doctor Van Den Hoogen y colaboradores, describieron en los Países Bajos un nuevo virus conocido como metapneumovirus humano (HMPV) perteneciente a la familia Paramyxoviridae que presenta una alta similitud filogenética al VSR, compartiendo una organización genómica similar, 1,2 .
