Desde la investigación realizada en los países escandinavos por Dan Olweus (1996), cada vez más investigadores de distintos países han iniciado estudios formales para comprender este fenómeno que ocurre en las instituciones educativas. La intimidación escolar es definida como la exposición de un estudiante repetidamente, durante cierto periodo de tiempo, a acciones agresivas por parte de uno o más estudiantes. Es una acción agresiva cuando alguien intencionalmente inflige daño sobre otro. Estas acciones pueden ser en forma verbal, en las redes sociales, contacto físico o en otras formas, como malos gestos faciales o la exclusión de un grupo social.
