Hence, the reception of ideas coming from the Enlightenment era can be understood from the perspective of those educators who addressed the modernizationof their study programs and the reform of academic structures in in their professorship. The clergyman Baltasar de los Reyes Marrero (1752-1809), recognized as the founder of the Modern Philosophy program at the Real y Pontiicia Universidad de Caracas, is one of these outstanding educators. Thus, this paper focuses on the general biographical features, intellectual formation and pedagogical efforts carried out in the Venezuelan university by Baltasar de los Reyes.En la historia de la Universidad colonial venezolana, representada por la Real y Pontiicia Universidad deCaracas, erigida por Real Cédula del 22 de diciembre de 1721, la recepción de las ideas de la Ilustración puede abordarse desde la perspectiva de los educadores que asumieron desde la cátedra la modernización de sus estudios y la reforma de sus estructuras académicas.Tal es el caso de la labor desempeñada por el clérigo Dr. Baltasar de los Reyes Marrero (1752-1809) a quien se le reconoce como el fundador de la cátedra de Filosofía Moderna en la Real y Pontiicia Universidad de Caracas. El propósito de este ensayo es presentar los rasgos biográicos generales, la formación intelectual y la labor pedagógica desempeñada en el seno de la universidad venezolana por este destacado educador.Dans l’histoire de l’Université coloniale vénézuélienne, représentée par l’Université royale et pontiicale de Caracas, érigée par une Ordonnance royale du 22 décembre 1721, la réception des idées des Lumières peut être abordée selon la perspective des professeurs, qui depuis la chaire de l’Université ont entrepris la modernisation de ses études et la réforme de ses structures académiques. C’est le cas du travail développé par le prêtre Dr. Baltasar de los Reyes Marrero (1752-1809) que l’on reconnaît comme le fondateur de la chaire de Philosophie moderne de l’Université royale et pontiicale de Caracas.
