Depending on this,the word ‘federal’ could refer to the dissipation process of the colonial order, identiied by the retroversion of sovereignty over the cities, or it could describe a federal movement intended to unify and consolidate. Both deinitions were virtuously related to the meaning of the word Nation.El objetivo de este artículo consiste en analizar los sentidos diversos que adoptó el federalismo argentino entre 18301880, en función de la relación de fuerzas cambiantes entre las provincias y el incipiente Estado central. En tal sentido, el vocablo federal podía aludir al proceso de descomposición del orden colonial, caracterizado por laretroversión de la soberanía a las ciudades o expresar un movimiento federal con vocación totalizadora y unificadora.
