Furthermore, the global heating is originating climatic changes that influence the rain patterns as well as the availability of the hydric resources. In this way, it is necessary to monitorize permanently the hydrographic basins in order to detect and correct possible alterations.This work deals with the design of a digital flow meter to measure the volume of water flowing in a river which allows collecting information. The process is based on the detection of the water’s current velocity through a cross-section of a river. It was used a helix with an effect hall sensor coupled to it to measure the velocity. The river’s depth is measured with a pressure sensor conveniently adjusted. Signals are coupled to a microcontroller which processes, storages and visualizes the information locally, transferring it to a computer in order to be analyzed by the final user. The text includes the prototype’s structure as well as the most relevant results of the calibration procedure.El ser humano siempre ha tenido la necesidad de conocer las cantidades de agua que fluyen en los ríos, con fines de aprovechamiento, de prevención o de mitigación de los daños causados por las inundaciones. Además, el calentamiento global está generando un cambio climático que influye, entre otros aspectos, en los patrones de lluvia y en la disponibilidad de los recursos hídricos. Por ello se hace necesario el monitoreo permanente de las cuencas hidrográficas para detectar alteraciones y tomar los correctivos adecuados. En el presente trabajo se describe el desarrollo de un medidor de caudal para ríos que facilita la recolección de información. El proceso se basa en la detección de la velocidad de la corriente de agua a través de una sección transversal del río. Para medir la velocidad se utilizó una hélice con un Sensor de efecto Hall acoplado a ella. La profundidad del río se mide con un Sensor de presión debidamente patronado. Las señales son acopladas a un micro-controlador que procesa, almacena y visualiza localmente la información, a la vez que permite su transferencia a un computador para el análisis por parte del usuario final.
