Tritrichomonas foetus is a single-celled parasite, a flagellate protozoan that colonizes the colon and the distal ileum of felines. Infected cats may be asymptomatic or may have clinical signs including diarrhea of large intestine. T. foetus infection is common in, but not limited to, high density populations of young purebred cats. Tests for this parasite are still not routinely performed in most veterinary clinics and T. foetus is often diagnosed as Giardia spp. Specific tests (fecal culture and polymerase chain reaction) should be considered in cats with diarrhea of the large intestine, especially those in which diagnosis and treatment for other causes of traditional large intestinal diarrhea have not achieved a clinical resolution. Recognition of this newly emerging disease and proper management of the sample are critical for the detection and treatment of feline trichomoniasis.
