In Europe, the optimistic ideas of positivism and scientism were triumphing on the back of the industrial revolution and technological advances, and the empire of the free market was flooding from Western Europe to all corners of the world, particularly the so-called former South American colonies that had not yet declared their independence half a century earlier.A finales del siglo XIX América Latina se convirtió en escenario de cambios significativos, muchos de los países del continente sufrieron procesos que repercutieron en la política, la economía, las relaciones sociales y muy especialmente en el ámbito del que quisiéramos ocuparnos en adelante: la educación. En Europa triunfaban a caballo de la revolución industrial y los avances tecnológicos las ideas optimistas del positivismo y el cientificismo, y el imperio del libre mercado inundaba desde el occidente europeo todos los rincones del mundo, en particular las llamadas ex-colonias sudamericanas que no hacía aún medio siglo habían declarado sus independencias.No final do século XIX, a América Latina tornou-se o cenário de mudanças significativas; muitos dos países do continente passaram por processos que tiveram repercussões na política, na economia, nas relações sociais e especialmente na área com que gostaríamos de lidar a seguir: a educação.
