description This article attempts to study the phenomenon of corruption in the revenue from tobacco in the New Kingdom of Granada in the late 18th century, from files that revenue sub-delegate judges presented against some tobacconists of the principal administration of Santafé, for embezzlement and the scale of their accounts. Qualitative and quantitative documents from the National Archives (Colombia), such as records of «debt in favour» as a historical source for the study of corruption and its possible quantification, and the mechanisms used by the revenue to punish embezzlement and provide redress to the Royal Treasury. In conclusion, the article contributes to explaining how the absence of a fixed salary for the administrators of the revenue from tobacco led to corrupt practices which were understood and judged as embezzlement.

Con documentación cualitativa y cuantitativa del Archivo General de la Nación (Colombia), se detalla: el uso de los registros de «deudas a favor» o «debidos cobrar» como fuente histórica para el estudio de la corrupción y su posible cuantificación, y los mecanismos que utilizó la renta para castigar el delito de malversación y resarcir a la Real Hacienda. En definitiva, el artículo contribuye a explicar cómo la ausencia de un salario fijo en los administradores particulares de la renta de tabaco fue un factor que los motivó a participar en prácticas corruptas que fueron entendidas y juzgadas por el delito de malversación.Cet article étudie le phénomène de la corruption dans la ferme du tabac du Nouveau Royaume de Grenade à la fin du XVIIIe siècle à partir des dossiers que les juges du fisc composèrent à l’encontre de quelques fermiers de la juridiction de Santafé pour le délit de détournement de fonds et pour des dérèglements comptables. Avec une documentation á la fois qualitative et quantitative provenant des Archives Générales de la Nation (Colombie), on analyse avec détail l’utilisation de registres des créances comme source historique pour l’étude de la corruption et pour éventuellement la quantifier, ainsi que les mécanismes employés par la ferme du tabac pour punir le délit de détournement de fonds et dédommager le fisc royal.
