The transcultural and polyphonic narrative of José María Arguedas is imbued with Quechua songs, which are structured through canonical rhetorical figures established by the aesthetics of Quechua culture. The aim of the article is to explain the use of the symbol as a central literary figure in the composition of the Quechua songs embedded in Arguedas’ narrative. The selected textual corpus consists of Quechua resistance songs. To identify and explain these symbols, cultural rhetoric has been used as a hermeneutic tool, proposed by Tomás Albaladejo, as it allows the discovery of the mechanisms of the rhetorical organization of lyrical discourse. The results of the study show that, indeed, the songs are configured around recurring symbols such as the bull, the butterfly, the dove, the tree, and the river. The contribution of the study lies in the explanation of the process of interdiscursive construction of the symbol in the Quechua songs. |

El objetivo del artículo es explicar el uso del símbolo como figura literaria central en la composición de las canciones quechuas insertas en la narrativa arguediana. El corpus textual seleccionado son las canciones quechuas de resistencia. Para identificar y explicar estos símbolos, se ha utilizado la retórica cultural como herramienta hermenéutica, propuesta por Tomás Albaladejo, dado que permite descubrir los mecanismos de la organización retórica del discurso lírico. Los resultados del estudio demuestran que, en efecto, las canciones se configuran en torno a símbolos recurrentes como el toro, la mariposa, la paloma, el árbol y el río. El aporte del estudio consiste en la explicación del proceso de la construcción interdiscursiva del símbolo en las canciones quechuas.A narrativa transcultural e polifônica de José María Arguedas é permeada por canções quéchuas; tais canções são estruturadas através de figuras retóricas canônicas, que são estabelecidas pela estética da cultura quéchua. O objetivo deste artigo é elucidar a utilização do símbolo como elemento literário fundamental na estruturação das canções quéchuas presentes na narrativa arguediana. O corpus textual selecionado é constituído por canções de resistência quechua. Para identificar e explicar estes símbolos, foi utilizada a retórica cultural como ferramenta hermenêutica, proposta por Tomás Albaladejo, uma vez que permite descobrir os mecanismos da organização retórica do discurso lírico. Os resultados do estudo mostram que, de facto, as canções se configuram em torno de símbolos recorrentes como o touro, a borboleta, a pomba, a árvore e o rio.
