Pintor nacido en Glasgow, Escocia el 22 de enero de 1853. Fue el segundo hijo de James Mann, un comerciante y conexionista exitoso. Tomó sus primeras clases de dibujo a nivel profesional con Robert Greenlees a la edad de diez años en Glasgow School of Art.
