What are the outstanding conceptual categories in students’ electromagnetic preconcepts? What do teaching learning strategies promote a significant learning of electromagnetic concepts? And which are the alternant formats for valuation and monitoring of learning electromagnetic concepts? Three instruments to collect information were used: a test application made to identify students’ electromagnetic preconcepts, development of deep interviews and participating observation in two groups that were selected to carry out the research. Subjects for the alternant conceptions were: electrostatic, electric phenomena in single circuits; electromagnetic definitions and applications and magnetism.En este trabajo se identifican las concepciones alternativas electromagnéticas en estudiantes universitarios; se comparan los resultados con los obtenidos por otros investigadores y se presentan recomendaciones para la enseñanza de los conceptos básicos electromagnéticos. Cuatro preguntas guiaron la investigación: ¿Cuáles son los conceptos / concepciones alternativas sobre el electromagnetismo en estudiantes universitarios de física general?; ¿cuáles son las categorías conceptuales relevantes en las preconcepciones electromagnéticas de los estudiantes?; ¿cuáles estrategias de enseñanza - aprendizaje promueven un aprendizaje significativo de los conceptos electromagnéticos?, y ¿cuáles son formas alternativas para la valuación y el monitoreo del aprendizaje de conceptos electromagnéticos? Se utilizaron tres instrumentos para recoger la información: La aplicación de una prueba que fue construida para identificar los preconceptos electromagnéticos de los estudiantes; el desarrollo de entrevistas profundas mediatizadas y la observación - participante del investigador en los dos grupos que se seleccionaron por conveniencia para llevar a cabo el estudio.
