Summary:In this work, electromagnetic alternate conceptions are identified; results are compared with another researchs, and recommendations for teaching basic electromagnetic concepts are presented. Four questions guided the research: what are the alternate concepts/conceptions about electromagnetism in General Physics university students? What are the outstanding conceptual categories in students’ electromagnetic preconcepts? What do teaching learning strategies promote a significant learning of electromagnetic concepts? And which are the alternant formats for valuation and monitoring of learning electromagnetic concepts? Three instruments to collect information were used: a test application made to identify students’ electromagnetic preconcepts, development of deep interviews and participating observation in two groups that were selected to carry out the research. Subjects for the alternant conceptions were: electrostatic, electric phenomena in single circuits; electromagnetic definitions and applications and magnetism.
