Studying the behavior of the endangered Caribbean manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus) is essential to guide conservation efforts, as it provides insights into how this subspecies interacts with its environment, socializes, and reproduces. Much of the current knowledge about its behavior comes from observations under human care, which have yielded useful reference data but do not fully capture the complexity of social dynamics in the wild. This study aimed to examine the behavior of the Caribbean manatee in its natural habitat through the use of drones. From December 2022 to June 2023, observations were conducted in Placencia Lagoon, Belize, at flight altitudes ranging from 20 to 229 meters. A total of 327 drone flights were carried out, generating 117.2 hours of 4K video at 30 fps. Of these, 86 videos passed quality filters for analysis. We recorded 207 individuals (190 adults and 17 calves), with group sizes ranging from one to 15 individuals, including 17 mothercalf pairs and three reproductive groups. The ethogram encompassed 61 behaviors, classified into six contexts. A video-tagging protocol was developed and implemented in Python. Results show that T. m. manatus is not highly gregarious but displays a broad behavioral repertoire, primarily in social contexts. In addition, reproductive behavior of Caribbean manatees is described here for the first time. These findings expand our understanding of the subspecies’ social complexity and highlight drones as a valuable, non invasive tool for studying behavior in natural environments.
