By analysing electronic medical records from the SES University Hospital of Caldas, a database is constructed and explored using IBM-SPSS Statistics software to describe the main clinical characteristics and estimate survival at 28 days of hospital stay for patients aged between 18 and 59 years admitted with severe covid-19 pneumonia to the intensive care unit. A bivariate analysis was performed to identify risk factors associated with mortality, and the distribution of variables was compared between survivors and non-survivors groups. Survival at intensive care unit was 60% at 28 days after admission, and the average length of stay was 12.8 days. Non statistical significance was obtained in the bivariate analysis. Survival functions were compared between patients who differed in terms of comorbidity, intervention, or laboratory findings. Consistent with previous reports, hyperlactataemia, acute kidney injury, septic shock, and prothrombotic states were found to confer a worse prognosis. Future studies with larger populations are needed to determine in detail the predictors of worse outcomes and stratify the risk of short-term death in order to guide actions in the clinical protocols for care of critically ill patients in the context of severe SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia.
